American Flag Etiquette

What you should know about our Flag!

It is the custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset. You may display the flag 24 hours a day if it is properly illuminated during the periods of darkness.

During inclement weather, you should only fly an all weather flag.

There should never be another flag or pennant placed above the American flag.

The flag, when flown at half staff, should be first raised to the top of the flag pole then lowered to the half staff position. The flag should be again raised to its peak position before lowered for the day.

The flag should always be hoisted briskly and lowered with ceremony.

No disrespect should be shown to the flag and it should never be flown with the union down, except as a signal in instances of extreme danger to life and property. The flag should never touch anything beneath it such as the ground, floor, water, etc.

During the ceremony of hoisting or posting the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all personnel present, except those in uniform, should face the flag and stand at attention with the right hand over the heart. Those in uniform should render the military salute. When not in uniform, men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder with the hand being over the heart.
